Bed bug vs carpet beetle

Carpet beetle larvae eat wool, hair, and felt in closets and along carpet edges. Bed bugs take blood and hide in mattress piping.

A bristly larva on a windowsill is usually a fabric pest. A flat, rusty, apple-seed insect in a seam is the blood feeder. Confirm which one you have before you buy a heat job. Typical US ID check, not a species certificate.

Key takeaways

  • Check the closet, carpet edge, and sunny sill first. Mattress piping is the bed bug hunt.
  • Carpet beetle larvae are bristly or carrot-shaped. Bed bugs are flat, oval, and rusty brown.
  • Adults on a sill after flowers are carpet beetles. Bed bugs do not fly to pollen.
  • Both leave skins. Dark dots that smear like a marker are bed bug feces.
  • Heat for a fabric pest is the expensive mistake.

EPA: carpet beetles are easy to mistake for bed bugs. The room they came from is the first split.

Closet and sill, or the piping

If you found the insect in wool, a sweater drawer, along a carpet edge under a sofa, or walking a sunny windowsill, start with carpet beetle. Ohio State: the larvae do the chewing. They crawl room to room. Damage often sits under heavy furniture and at carpet edges. Adults fly in spring, come to lights, and ride in on cut flowers.

UC IPM: adults eat pollen and nectar outdoors. Indoors they show up on sills, drapes, or panes because they want light. Larvae eat wool, leather, silk, and fur. They do not spin webs. They leave shed skins and fecal pellets about the size of a grain of salt where they fed.

If the insect is in mattress piping, a box-spring dust cloth, or a headboard bolt, start with bed bug. That hunt is on signs of bed bugs. Itchy skin after sleep is a maybe either way. Larval hairs can irritate. Bed bugs feed on blood. EPA still treats bites as a weak test.

Ohio: black carpet beetle larvae run golden to dark brown, up to about 1/2 inch. Varied carpet beetle adults are nearly round with mixed white, brown, and yellow scales.

Bag a few in a clear bag next to a coin. A smear on the sheet is useless.

Skins and dots

Both leave skins. That is the mix-up.

Carpet beetle skins sit where fabric was eaten, with those salt-size pellets. Bed bug fecal spots are dark pin-head dots that can bleed on fabric like a marker. EPA also lists rusty stains from a crushed bug and pale eggs about 1 mm glued in a seam.

If you only have a skin and a closet full of wool, do not sign a whole-home heat paper yet.

Before you buy heat

A whole-home heat job typically runs $2,500–$6,000. Carpet beetles usually need vacuuming, laundry, and throwing out the badly infested wool. UC IPM: insecticides may not be needed once the food is gone.
