Tiny black bugs in the bathroom

Tiny black bugs in the bathroom are usually moth flies breeding in drain film, or springtails sitting on wet tile. Bed bugs do not live in a drain.

If it flutters a few feet and looks fuzzy, tape the drain overnight. If it jumps and has no wings, dry the room.

Key takeaways

  • Fuzzy, weak flutter near a sink or tub is a moth fly. The slime is inside the pipe and the overflow.
  • A jump with no wings is a springtail. That is a humidity problem, not a drain-bomb problem.
  • Tape the drain overnight, sticky side down, or invert a jar. Flies on the tape name that drain.
  • A brush on the overflow beats bleach. Bleach sits on the slime and misses the larvae underneath.
  • A trail of ants or oval nymphs under the vanity is a different job. Check the kitchen too.

Watch how it moves before you buy crystals.

Flutter or jump

Penn State: a moth fly (drain fly) is about a tenth of an inch, dark, fuzzy, weak in the air. It sits on tile, a wall, or the inside of a tub. It breeds in the gelatinous film that coats a drain, not in the water you see.

Alabama Extension: look at overflow holes, unused guest-bath drains, the base of a toilet, and a leaking trap. The overflow is the one people miss.

Penn State on springtails: they are 1 to 2 mm, they need wet air, and they show up in bathrooms when the room stays humid. They jump. They do not fly. Dry the room and they go.

An oval runner under the vanity at night can be a German cockroach nymph. Check the kitchen before you treat only the bath. A line along the baseboard is an ant trail.

Tape the drain. Then scrape.

Penn State: put a jar over the drain, or tape a bag over the overflow. Check it. Flies in the jar name that opening.

Alabama: clear tape, sticky side down, overnight. Then pull the stopper and the overflow plate and scrub the slime with a stiff brush. Enzyme foam can follow the brush. A splash of bleach sits on the film and leaves the larvae underneath.

Arkansas: a guest shower that never runs is a classic nursery. Keep cleaning for a few weeks so the next hatch has nothing to eat. Do not pour insecticide down a drain.

Skip total-release foggers. They do not coat the inside of a pipe.

If flies keep coming after every drain in the room is clean, the leak may be in a wall or a slab. That is a plumber, not a spray can. Log the room and a photo in the sighting log. If you are deciding whether to keep going yourself, read DIY vs professional. Contact for a referral path.
